How to Swap a Deep-Carry Pocket Clip

What a deep-carry clip is, and why bother
A factory clip usually leaves a knife or light sitting high in the pocket, with a visible length of clip and often the whole pommel or tailcap above the seam. A deep-carry clip repositions the item so it sinks almost fully into the pocket, leaving just enough tab to grab. What you need
The whole job comes down to bits and the right replacement clip:
- The correct Torx driver. Pocket-clip screws are almost always Torx, most commonly T6 or T8, occasionally T10 on larger hardware. Step 1: identify the screw size
Before you buy anything, check what your clip uses. Most knife and light clips are T6 or T8 Torx, and a driver set that includes both covers nearly everything. Fitting the correct bit is the single most important step, because a bit that is a hair too small is what rounds out a screw head. Seat the bit fully and squarely before you apply any force.
Step 2: remove the old clip
Note the orientation first, and take a photo if you like, so you know which way the new clip faces. Back the screws out over your towel and set them somewhere they cannot roll off; these screws are tiny and a dropped one is often gone for good. Lift the old clip away and look at the mounting holes.
Step 3: clean and inspect the threads
With the clip off, blow or brush the pocket lint out of the screw holes and off the threads. Grit in the threads is why screws feel gritty going back in and why people overtighten trying to seat them. If the threads look clean and undamaged, you are ready to mount the new clip.
Step 4: mount the new clip without overtightening
Line up the deep-carry clip, start each screw by hand a turn or two to avoid cross-threading, then snug them down. Stop at snug. The frames on knives and lights are often aluminum, titanium, or brass, and those threads strip far more easily than steel; a screw driven too hard will spin free and ruin the hole. Tighten to firm resistance, not to the last quarter-turn your wrist can manage. If a screw will not hold, that is a job for thread locker, not more torque.
Step 5: thread locker, if needed
Clip screws can back out from daily vibration and flex. A tiny dab of removable blue thread locker on the threads keeps them put while still letting you remove them later. Never use the permanent red grade on pocket hardware, because you will never get it out without heat, which you do not want near a knife or a light. The same skill across your carry
The reason this is worth learning once is that it transfers. When not to do it
A few cautions. Some frame-lock knives use a clip screw that also retains part of the lock or an over-travel stop, so do not remove those blindly. Swapping hardware can void a warranty on some brands, so check if that matters to you.
